Happy Chinese New Year!

Article Date: 2011/02/10 | Return to CATS College news

CATS College Canterbury students celebrated the Chinese New Year in style! 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit, and events in Canterbury included paper cutting and Chinese films, presentations on the history and culture of China, and on the origins of New Year customs. Staff and students were given red envelopes with chocolate money and fortune cookies, and watched films made by the students about the monster Nian and his place in Chinese mythology. Students re-enacted on film the visit of Nian to the village where he terrorised villagers, and how firecrackers, the colour red and the courage of the Chinese people scared the monster way.

CATS College Canterbury celebrates the diversity of the student body with cultural days and events all year round. Other events this year include Korean, Japanese, German, Vietnamese, British and African evenings, each one with an atmosphere all of its own. Students often come in national dress and celebrate their culture and history together. Happy Chinese New Year!
